Autumn has deepened. This year, the fire energy is strong, and the ninth period also belongs to fire. The whole era feels lit by a single lamp—everything is clearly seen, and everything catches fire easily. In such a year, people grow restless, eager to change something at once: a job, a city, a whole life. But real change rarely starts with these big moves.
I. Character is not the cause of thought, but its sediment
We often say, "This is just who I am, so this is how I think." But if we stretch time out, the order is actually reversed. A thought repeats, and like minerals in water, it settles bit by bit. Over time it hardens into stone, and that stone we call character.
So character is not the source; it is the result. It is the sum of countless past thoughts—small ideas we have long forgotten but still repeat every day, pressed layer upon layer into something solid.
II. The lever of change lies in the most inconspicuous thought of each day
If character is sediment, then the lever of change is not character itself, but the thought before it settles—the one not yet hardened. It is usually very small: the first thought upon waking, the first sentence that rises when we feel wronged, the "never mind" or "try again" in the face of a small matter.
These thoughts seem insignificant because they are so ordinary. But precisely because they are ordinary, they appear every day, and so they have the chance to be repeated—and the chance to be replaced. Change is not a single feat, but a day-by-day swapping of one thought for another at the same moment.
III. Day by day, the chain moves like this
Character changes thought, thought changes action, action changes destiny—this chain sounds like a proverb, but it is actually a very slow path. It does not rely on resolve; it relies on repetition.
Change one thought today, change it again at the same moment tomorrow. The day after, you may forget—then begin again. Sediment does not form in a day, nor does it loosen in a day. But when the same thought is repeated enough times, new sediment begins. A new character slowly takes shape, new thoughts grow from it, actions shift accordingly, and destiny quietly turns its direction there.
This year the fire energy is strong, and people grow impatient. But fire also reminds us: light must be sustained to shine far. There is no need to rush to change a whole life. You might first notice the smallest thought of today.
The mirror shows you as you are; the path is yours to walk. Thoughts are the daily glimmer—over time, they become the road.
